Medicine Hat College (MHC) has been recognized for its outstanding contributions to community relations, with the prestigious Community Service Award presented by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The award was formally presented at the CCAA Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, June 12th, in Ottawa.
The Community Service Award is a testament to Medicine Hat College's impactful community relations programs. These initiatives, which have been continuously improved over the years, have made a significant difference in the community. The college's student-athletes, through their extensive volunteerism, have positively influenced 85 organizations and events during the 2023-2024 academic year.
"Medicine Hat Rattlers, year after year, are a beacon for working with the community. This year was no exception. Their work with empowering youth and, in particular, females will have a lasting impact on those involved. Being a Rattler means being a member of a community bigger than their team and their campus. It’s about being a member of Medicine Hat and beyond," said Bob Murray, CCAA VP Marketing.
The recognition is evidence of the remarkable contributions MHC student-athletes have made to the community. Their dedication and engagement, totaling 2,075 volunteer hours, in diverse activities such as the Rattlers Steak Night Fundraiser and youth sports camps, have fostered a culture of service and altruism within the athletic program. Their actions inspire others to give back to their communities.
These volunteer activities build strong relationships between the college and the community and enhance the college's reputation. Coaches and administrators have witnessed firsthand the dedication and character of these student-athletes, which positively reflects on the athletic program and emphasizes the importance of holistic development beyond sports.
The diverse volunteer activities have helped MHC student-athletes develop valuable leadership, teamwork, and empathy skills. These skills contribute to their performance on and off the field and prepare them for future endeavors. Volunteerism also strengthens ties with various community organizations, reinforcing the college's role as a community leader.
The recognition by CCAA is a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of MHC's student-athletes, coaches, and administrators.
