Athletes of the Week - September 16

The Rattlers are proud to announce this week’s Players of the Week, sponsored by Cheerleaders Barber Lounge and BYZ Enterprises.

#2 Alexis Ratke - Women's Soccer

Alexis Ratke made her presence felt in Medicine Hat College’s 5-1 win over the University of Alberta–Augustana on September 13. Playing as a midfielder and as a winger, she had four shots, scored twice, and set up another goal for #9 Nicoly Souza. Ratke was resopnsible for opening the scoreboard after almost an entire half, when she found the back of the net at the 43-minute. She added another goal in the 58th minute, capping off a dominant team performance. Ratke’s ability to create and finish opportunities earned her the nod as Player of the Game, anchoring a Rattlers attack that outshot UAA 16–8 and delivered three goals in the opening 50 minutes.

The following day against Lethbridge Polytechnic, Ratke continued to be a steady influence in the middle of the park despite the Rattlers falling 2-0. She recorded three shots with one on target and linked up play while tracking back to help absorb Lethbridge’s second-half pressure. Even without getting on the scoresheet, she remained active in possession and transitions, showing the consistency that marked her standout weekend. With two goals, an assist, and nine total shots across both matches, Ratke’s impact was pivotal in securing a split result for the Rattlers and earned her the Rattlers's Player of the Week honours.

#2 Gavin Labrash - Men's Soccer

The Medicine Hat Rattlers men's soccer program played only one game over the weekend, hosting Highway 3 rivals, the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks. Coming into the match, the Rattlers held a 2–0 record and were ranked #4 in the country. On the other side, the Kodiaks were coming off a home-opening win against the Olds Broncos and a tie with the Red Deer Kings.

The game against the Kodiaks began with an intense battle in midfield, where Gavin Labrash operated as a holding midfielder. With a strong physical presence running across the field, Labrash secured dominance for the Rattlers in the defensive sector, linking play to the attacking midfielders and wingers. Just one minute before the first goal by #12 Joao Cintra, #2 Gavin Labrash stole the ball from the Kodiaks’ striker right in front of the Rattlers’ defensive box, helping his team regain possession. This sequence sparked a counterattack that led to the opening goal. Labrash continued to make his presence felt throughout the match, stopping attacks and distributing the ball from the back. His effort earned him Rattlers Player of the Week honours.

Men's and women's soccer are back in action this Saturday at home, when they host the Ambrose Lions.
